Fashion anthropology brief - Spring 2023

The analysis of fashion obsessions

Project aim / objective / brief

As part of the Fashion Anthropologies project, the initial objective was to conduct individual research into topics of personal interest within the realm of fashion. This was followed by forming collaborative groups to explore connections between our diverse research areas. The overarching aim was to contribute to a fashion anthropology exhibition showcasing the collective work of all groups. My focus was on investigating the cultural significance of Formula 1 team caps, analysing their role in shaping identity and culture within the Formula 1 community.

Project approach

In the initial phase, I conducted extensive research into the history, symbolism, and evolution of Formula 1 team caps. This involved analysing their design , cultural context, and the fan communities they represent. Simultaneously, my team members explored their own chosen topics—hippy fashion, fashion in horror, and fur—seeking to uncover connections that would later converge in our group exhibition.

Project Result

Our collaborative effort culminated in the creation of the exhibition section titled "Performing Identity: The Intersection of Appropriation and Authenticity." This thematic exploration was underpinned by our collective research findings, which revealed surprising parallels and intersections between our seemingly unrelated topics. Our part of the exhibition was a visually captivating film narrated by each team member, providing insight into our research journey and highlighting the interconnectedness of our subjects. I styled and did the photography for the Formula 1 team caps section, as well as the photography for the fur and fashion in horror segments.
